Electrician Tools

A good tradesman can never blame his tools. But, if that is to be true, it is important that you choose dependable electrician tools to perform your job as an electrician.

Electricians need a wide range of tools to perform their jobs accurately. The following discussion on electrician tools is intended to help aspiring electricians as well as any one who would like to learn more about the complex tools employed across the whole spectrum of complete electrical work.

Wire stripper

Often times, electricians need to remove the plastic surrounding the copper/aluminium wires/strands in the cable so that they can attach it to another wire. This process is easily achieved through a small hand held tool that cuts easily through the plastic without causing any damage to the metal wire beneath.

Power drill

A power drill with a set of drilling bits is another immensely helpful tool in the hands of electricians. This is particularly useful when you are working with concrete/wooden surfaces and are required to install a variety of gadgets that are found in most households. The major advantage with the power drill is that you can control the diameter as well as the depth of the hole you need to drill. A crude way of achieving the same result would be by using a hammer and punch. However, this method does not guarantee the precision offered by the power drill. Most professionals do not choose the cordless variant of a power drill because it cannot deliver the same amount of power as a wired power drill.

Soldering iron

In modern times, most of us have seen a wide array of computer chips and cards with those tiny dots which are also called printed circuit boards. The tiny dots of metal (solder) are used to fasten the small parts and wires. A soldering iron is essential for electricians when they are called upon to repair circuit boards and broken wires that are best connected using a solder. The tip of the soldering iron supplies intense heat to the metal (often lead) helping it melt and fall on the point where the joint is being established.

Multi-meter

A multi meter is helpful in checking continuity as well as voltage for varying reasons while you are executing a job.

Testers – Different types of testers are required by electricians to check various aspects while executing an electrical job. Some of these testers are:-

Circuit tester – Helps in understanding whether a circuit is properly grounded or not

Voltage tester - Voltage testers are helpful in ensuring that the wires electricians work with are not ‘hot’ and no current is passing through them when the main power has been disconnected.

Continuity tester

Continuity testers are relatively inexpensive and help in identifying broken wires in an electrical system. The same job can be done by a multimeter too, though it is a trifle more expensive and complex.

Apart from the above, the following are among the general electrician tools complementing the specific tools.

1. Pliers

2. Hammers

3. Screwdrivers

4. Compressed air

5. Electrical tape

6. Measuring tape
